Historic Political Reform: Women’s Reservation Bill 2026 Tabled in Parliament; Lok Sabha Seats Expanded to 850!

Bengaluru: In a monumental move aimed at shifting the gender dynamics of Indian politics, the Central Government has officially introduced the landmark Women’s Reservation Bill 2026 and the accompanying Delimitation Bill 2026 in the Parliament. The bill guarantees a historic 33% quota for women in both the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies ahead of the 2029 general elections.

Lok Sabha Strength Shifted to 850 Seats: To seamlessly implement the one-third quota without shrinking the existing general seats, the government has proposed a massive constitutional amendment to increase the overall strength of the Lok Sabha from 550 to 850 members. This extensive boundary remapping (delimitation exercise) will pave the way for a significantly higher number of women lawmakers in the Indian Parliament.

Gender Representation Row Sparks in Karnataka Cabinet: Simultaneously, a local political storm has brewed in Karnataka regarding female representation. Following the induction of Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s new team, Opposition Leader R. Ashoka heavily criticized the Congress government for having zero women ministers. Responding to the row, CM D.K. Shivakumar stated that cabinet vacancies are still open and asked aspiring female legislators to wait patiently for the upcoming expansions.
